Embroidery Machines

In this module the students will be utilizing embroidery machines to create personalized embroidered patches. The Brother PE540D is a USB enabled technology that quickly turns images into stitches. SewArt is a software that turns images into toolpaths that the embroidery machine can read and translate into stitches.

The first project requires little to no preparation from the student as each student will utilize clip art or pre-made designs in the Lab to develop an embroidery pattern. The RI MML Team will assist students in the Lab with this process

The second project requires students to find a JPEG & convert the image to linework via SewArt software. The process will likely require refinement, as there are a number of variables that impact the outcome. Please refer to the instructions & guidelines below.

Project 1: Embroidering simple, single-color designs

  • Come prepared with a simple shape, icon, or silhouette.

    • Note: Thread colors are limited to the selection on the lab.

Project 2: Converting a Simple Image to a Toolpath

  • Identify a 2-color image you would like to translate to embroidery

    • Note: Simple images, like clip-art, are most easily converted to embroidery

    • The image may be unique (created by you) or available via an internet search

Please Follow These Instructions:

  • Right click on the image

  • Select “View Image”

  • Ensure the image is a JPEG (JPG) or PNG

  • Select the image, right click, and select “Save Image As…”

  • Save image to correct folder

  • Open SewArt, import image file

  • Click auto-sew

  • Delete unnecessary colors from color list

  • Connect machine to computer via USB and save file to external drive (embroidery machine)

Please Consider These Guidelines:

  • Pictures that work well are clipart, silhouettes, logos

  • Two-color images (.jpg or .png) are easiest to convert

  • Please save a copy of your image or URL in a convenient, accessible spot which we can access when you visit the RI MML
